Spring 2010 TRINITY Magazine, Career and Calling
Kevin Walker ’05
Title: Account executive
Kevin Walker ’05 has accomplished a lot in his five years since graduating from Trinity. His interest in business turned into his college major—a major that turned into an internship, into a job, into a career.
In just the past two years, Walker, in addition to his position as account executive at Euclid Insurance, has started two real estate investment companies and has helped plant a church. The companies, Business Excellence Group and William & Thomas, were started in 2008 by Walker who serves as president. Walker also serves as general manager of City Harvest Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois, a satellite church he started with a pastor and others from their home church.
It’s no surprise that Walker’s concentration of study in Trinity’s business program was entrepreneurship. Recalling his time at the College, he notes three valuable learning experiences: a senior business project, his internship, and his role as student association president.
In his senior year, Walker’s business class collaborated on a consulting project with the Village of Robbins. The village’s goal was to re-develop land on which to establish an open market on the property, so the students helped develop a business plan. “This was not just an assignment about a concept,” said Walker, “it was a real-life situation.”
Real-life experience is what Walker advises Trinity students to acquire through internships. During his junior and senior years, he interned at Liberty Mutual, which offered him a permanent position after graduation. For recent grads on the job hunt, Walker advises this: “Be faithful in your job search and believe God is faithful. And don’t be afraid of small beginnings.” These, he said, bring experience, connections, and open doors.
Walker learned this first hand, not just through his internship, but also through serving as student association president. Today he is in his first year as president of Trinity’s alumni board, which he has served on since his graduation in 2005.
Being in business has given him the opportunity to create professional relationships and personal friendships within which he carries out the call he said all Christians have—to share their faith through words and actions.
