Major: Social Work
Title: Medic, U.S. Air Force
Immediately after graduation I joined the U.S. Air Force as a medic. My training has enabled me to gain valuable all-around life experience and skills. I have worked in a level 1 trauma center, inpatient mental health, and the emergency room. My training will soon begin as a flight medic with an Aeromedical Evacuation Unit, transporting wounded personnel around the world.
Overall, the skills and knowledge I gained through my time at Trinity enable me to connect with my patients much more easily than many of my coworkers. The compassion that I’m able to provide on a personal level sets me apart from my counterparts. Being able to discover and use a patient’s underlying social issues as well as being able to utilize the concept of person-in-environment allows me to work with and treat many of the barriers that patients put up as they’re being assessed for medical care.
Those skills can also, at times, allow me to pick up on the difference between a patient who is dealing with physical issues and illnesses and one who may be dealing with mental challenges (a common occurrence with members returning from overseas). I highly value the skills and abilities that I learned from my professors at Trinity.
