- The student will demonstrate analytical thinking processes by studying various mathematical subjects.
- The student will demonstrate recognition of and appreciation for the orderliness and beauty of the creation as reflected in mathematics.
- The student will be able to read, understand, and evaluate mathematical literature.
- The student will be proficient in using current technological tools for mathematics. These tools include the C++ programming language, the Maple software package, and graphing calculators.
- The students will apply mathematics via modeling and problem solving.
- The student will be able to communicate understanding of mathematical concepts, in both oral and written contexts.

The following learning outcomes apply only for students completing the Mathematics Education Major:

- The student will develop confidence and competence in teaching mathematics to students at the elementary or secondary level.
- The student will demonstrate mastery of mathematical concepts taught in the elementary and secondary school.

Throughout the year assessment data is gathered through senior and alumni surveys, the ETS major field test, a capstone project, State of Illinois Certification Exam, content area surveys, and course embedded assessment to determine how well the program is meeting its student learning outcomes. ]]>Mathematics is a powerful tool for solving practical problems, as well as a highly creative field of study, combining logic and precision with intuition and imagination. A major goal of mathematics is to reveal and explain patterns, whether the patterns appear as electrical impulses in an animal’s nervous system, fluctuation in stock market prices, or as the fine detail of an abstract geometric figure.

Trinity Christian College’s proximity to metropolitan Chicago offers its mathematics majors unique education and employment advantages. The wide diversity of industry, business, and institutions near Trinity allow for a broad range of internship opportunities. The education program provides placements in diverse school systems during novice and student teaching semesters. Trinity’s math department is an active participant in the mathematics division of the Association of Colleges in the Chicago Area (ACCA). Activities include area-wide competitions, joint seminars, and an annual symposium of student research presentations.

Upper-level mathematics courses include work in discrete structures, linear and abstract algebra, differential equations, real analysis, geometry, numerical analysis, and probability and statistics. The Senior Seminar provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the concepts, contextual, foundational, and worldview issues and applications studied in past course work. The seminar emphasizes how these issues will impact their lives beyond the College. Presentations, both in class and off campus, are key components of the course.

Many of Trinity’s mathematics graduates choose to pursue a teaching career. Demand for qualified mathematics teachers at middle schools and high schools continues to be strong. Current trends in elementary schools include an enhanced role for teachers who are specialists in mathematics. However, not all mathematics graduates choose to teach. Some pursue careers in diverse fields such as data management and data mining, software development, videography, business management, and finance.

A math major at Trinity also prepares you for graduate work in numerous fields, including pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, actuarial sciences, and computer science. A math major, together with other suitably selected courses, can equip you for graduate work in medicine, bio-statistics, business administration, engineering, finance, law, economics, and other analytical fields.

As Reformed Christians, we believe that God has created, redeemed, and still sustains every aspect of the world around us. It is our task to appreciate the beauty and well-orderedness of his creation and to use our God-given abilities to subdue it and to use it for his purposes. Thus, the aim of the mathematics department is to use analytical thinking to help prepare students to be Christians who are qualified and professional in their chosen vocations. This is accomplished in three ways: we work to develop students who are proficient in mathematics, to educate students for a life of Christian service, and to develop in the students good work habits. The proficiency in mathematics requires the background, skills, and analytical thinking necessary for these students to succeed professionally in their chosen work environment: graduate school, industry, or the elementary or secondary school classroom. The secondary mathematics education major is designed for teachers in grades 6 through 12. This program meets the major graduation requirements only for students completing the secondary education certification program.
