Track and
Field Opens Season With Record Performances (2/12/05)
The track and
field teams opened their indoor season at an 11-team indoor meet at Taylor
University (IN). In just their first appearance the Trolls had some great
individual performances and set six school indoor records.
The women's team
picked up some team points as Ashley Afman, Rachel Ooms,
Carrie Flowers, and Sandra Hoekstra finished in 5th place
in the 4 X 800 meter relay. Their time of 10:43.01 was good enough to break
the school record in that event. Kaitlin Merrow dashed to a school
record in the 200 meter with a time of 28.84. Ashley Afman's time
of 1:08.10 in the 400 meter put her in the TCC record book. In the middle
distance races, Sandra Hoekstra set a school record in the 600 meter
with a time of 1:51.71. Kathleen Boeringa qualified for the finals
in the shot put and ended in 9th place with a throw of 32'10.25".
The men got in
the team standings as Rich Visser finished in 8th place (2:43.61)
in the 1000 meter run. Jesse Marlink led the way in the sprints
with a school record performance in the 400 meter at 54.64. Thomas Donovan
found a school record in the shot put with a throw of 40'1.5" for a 13th
place finish.
The Trolls will
compete this coming weekend in an invitational at Lewis University on February
18-19.
