Loses In Final Inning (4/14/06)
The Trolls were
hoping to repeat Tuesday's winning performance against Illinois Institute
of Technology when they faced them again on the road. This second time
around the score was tied after eight innings and IIT came up big in the
bottom of the ninth to hand the Trolls a 7-6 loss. The team is now 10-16
for the season and 3-6 in the CCAC.
In the second
inning the Trolls got on the board with one run. IIT answered with solo
homer in the bottom of the inning to keep it even. Another run was scored
in the third when a double by Adam McIntyre brought Andrew Van
Byssum across the plate. IIT came right back and scored two more to
take the lead.
The Trolls kept
the momentum going in the fourth inning. They scored one run and then,
with two outs and two runners on base, Van Byssum cranked a long
ball for three run homer to give the Trolls the lead at 6-3. That score
held until IIT tied the game 6-6 with two runs in the seventh and two in
the eighth. The Trolls ninth inning at bat did not produce anything with
a quick three up and three down. In the bottom of the inning IIT's first
batter nailed a homer that ended the game.
The team had
nine hits for the game; Van Byssum had three and Aaron Werkman
with
two. Joel DeRuiter pitched for seven innings and gave up nine hits
and five runs. Rich Tameling finished the game and takes the loss.
The Trolls will
host the University of St. Francis in a conference doubleheader on Saturday
at noon.
