Softball Competes in Iowa Wesleyan Tournament  (4/15/06)
On Friday and Saturday the Trolls played in the Sammons Classic at Iowa Wesleyan College. The team lost their first four games of the tournament and then finally picked up a win in their final game. In the first day of competition they lost 2-3 to St. Ambrose University (IA), lost 5-8 to Iowa Wesleyan, and lost 4-2 to Hannibal-LaGrange College (MO). The next day they dropped their first game, 7-8, to Ashford University (IA) and then defeated Harris Stowe State University (MO), 8-6. The Trolls are now 13-23 for the season. 

In the first day of competition the Trolls had a difficult holding on to their leads. In the opening game against St. Ambrose the Trolls had a 2-0 lead after their at bat in the sixth inning. St. Ambrose picked up one run in the bottom of the sixth and then hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to end the game. Again in the Iowa Wesleyan game the Trolls were ahead 4-0 after four inning. IWC tied the game up with two runs in the fifth and then two more in the seventh. The Tigers scored four runs in the extra inning and the Trolls could not answer. The team also had a 2-0 fifth inning lead in the Hannibal-LaGrange game disappear to a 4-2 loss. 

The next day the Trolls took on Ashford in the morning. After three innings they were up 4-2. Ashford then scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take an 8-2 lead. In their final at bat the Trolls had four hits, including triples by Sarah Lerner and Gail Landini. However they came up short, scoring only three more runs before inning was retired. In the second game of the day the Trolls grabbed a 6-0 lead behind two home runs by Laura Arendsen. Harris Stowe had a big sixth inning, scoring six runs and tying the game. The Trolls pounded out five hits in the seventh inning for their final two runs that won the game. 

For the weekend the team had 43 hits for a .283 batting average. Laura Arendsen, .471, and Sarah Lerner, .375, each had two home runs and one triple. Gail Landini also batted .375 for the season. Stacey Wagner came up with a home run, her first of the season. 

The Trolls will play at Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN) on Monday, April 17, in a conference doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
