Top Michigan Athlete Joins Baseball Program  (1/30/07)
For the second year in a row Coach Matt Schans has found quality in the baseball program at Holland Christian High School (MI). Senior standout Nick Scholten, second baseman for the Maroons, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Trolls next year.

Scholten, an all-state player, was named the Most Valuable Player of the conference last season as a junior. It is easy to see why when you look at his statistics from the year. As a leadoff hitter he recorded a .500 batting average with 51 hits, including 10 doubles and three triples. He also scored 43 runs with 35 stolen bases and 41 RBIs.

"I am very happy that Nick is choosing to come to Trinity," said Schans. "We are graduating a number of infielder and Nick is talented enough to step in and contribute immediately. In addition he has shown the ability to be a solid top-of-the-lineup hitter and an excellent base runner."

Scholten knows what it takes to win as the Maroons have been very successful, winning over 50 games in the past two years. Last season they advanced to the state quarterfinals and posted a 27-6 record. Scholten was named all-conference, all-area, all-district, and second-team all-state.

At Trinity Scholten will join former teammate Jeff Nykerk, who is currently entering his freshman season.

"Holland Christian coach Mike Ott has done a great job over the past three years with their program," said Schans. "They have had tremendous success on the field, and more importantly he has produced athletes that are outstanding men. He has helped tremendously with the recruitment of both Nick and Jeff and deserves a lot of credit for what he does for his players."

Scholten received offers to other schools, but felt that Trinity was a good place for him. "I looked at all the things, from the baseball to the academics to the location, and I felt that Trinity was the best fit for me," Scholten said.

Coach Schans agrees and believes that Nick will be a great student-athlete who will represent Trinity well.
