Fall Sport Athletes Receive Recognition (12/7/07)
The Trinity fall sports athletes excelled both in athletic competition and in the classroom. A large number of these athletes were recognized at the conference, regional, and national levels for their outstanding efforts this season. Overall the soccer teams, cross country teams, and volleyball team had 12 players earn all-conference honors, nine players receive all-region accolades, and four athletes merit all-American status.

The women’s soccer team, who took third place at the NCCAA national tournament, received a number of those post-season honors. Of exceptional note individually are Mindi Harkema ‘09, Natalie Buikema ‘09, and Taryne Blomgren ‘09. All three of these athletes received all-conference, all-region, and all-American recognition. Also of special mention are Leanne Visser ’09, who received the NCCAA Tournament Defensive MVP award, and Coach Josh Lenarz, who was named the NCCAA North Central Region Coach of the Year.

Deserving special mention, men’s cross country runner Andy Jellema ’09 had an exceptional season. He set the school record, was named all-conference and all-region, earned NCCAA all-American honors, and was a qualifier for the NAIA national championships.

Equally impressive to their athletic accomplishments are the achievements of the student-athletes in the classroom. Of the 34 eligible athletes from the five fall sports, 19 earned NAIA and/or NCCAA scholar-athlete recognition. In order to earn those honors the student-athlete must be a junior or senior, have been in attendance for at least one year, and have an overall grade point average of at least 3.4.

“We are well aware that we have many strong students on our athletics teams, but having over fifty percent earn scholar-athlete honors in a given semester is very impressive,” said athletics director Jeff Raymond. “I commend all of our student-athletes for the effort that they put forth to handle their busy schedules and keep academics as a top priority.”

While each of the fall sports had at least one individual recognized for academic achievement the women’s soccer team led the way with eight players earning both scholar-athlete honors, which is the most among all NAIA schools and tied for the most in the NCCAA. The volleyball squad tied for the most on the NCCAA scholar-athlete list with six.
