Men’s Basketball Denied by Goshen  (12/29/07)
In their first game after the Christmas break the Trolls came up short in a home contest against Goshen College (IN). Despite a great run in the final minutes of the game, the Trolls could not make up the half-time deficit and lost the game 67-78. They are now 7-7 for the season.

The Trolls struggled offensively in the first period, scoring only 15 points for the half. They had to fight hard to get an open look and ended up shooting only 24% and finding the basket only once from behind the arc. As a result they were trailing by 13 at the intermission, 15-28.

Trinity picked up their intensity in the second period and attacked on both ends of the floor with more urgency. However through the first 13 minutes of the period, they could not seem to make a dent in the scoring margin.

With seven minutes to play Goshen hit a three-pointer to make the score 56-37. That was the final field goal that Trinity allowed in the period as the remainder of the Maple Leafs points were scored from the free throw line.

With less than three minutes to play the Trolls, who trailed by 14, went on a scoring streak, hitting five three-pointers and closing the gap to five points. However also in those final three minutes Goshen scored 15 points from the line to hold the Trolls off and to finish with the 11-point win.

Overall in the second period the Trolls hit 10 of 17 three-point attempts. Meanwhile Goshen was 26 for 35 at the line for the half.

Kurt Gruppen ended with 21 points and Will Bruinsma added 20. They each scored 15 of those points from the arc. Ross Stuursma had 14 points and was the high rebounder with eight. Bruinsma ended the game with seven assists.

The Trolls will play again on Monday, December 31, at home against Saint Xavier University at 3:00 pm.
