Men’s Basketball Wins in Triple Overtime  (2/7/08)
It took three extended periods of play for the Trolls to capture a victory at Purdue University-Calumet. After remaining deadlocked after two overtimes, the Trolls out-scored the Peregrines 13 to 9 in the third extra period for an 88-84 win. The team is now 14-10 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
 
Throughout the entire regulation and overtime periods there was no clear indication who would be the victor of the game. Each team took the time leading on the scoreboard and coming up with big plays when needed.
 
The Trolls out-scored the Peregrines by two points in the first half, 31-29. However the Purdue out-scored Trinity by two in the second period to create a 61-61 end of regulation tie.
 
The lead went in favor of Purdue-Calumet in the first overtime until Ross Stuursma hit a field goal with 36 seconds to play to tie the game. The Trolls got the ball back in the final seconds, but could not get the look they wanted and the game was 66-66.
 
In the second overtime period it was Stuursma again who hit a jumper to give the Trolls a two-point lead with 14 second left. The Peregrines came down and scored to tie the game with four seconds left to end the period at 75-75.
 
Purdue-Calumet gained the upper hand midway through the third extra period, taking an 84-81 lead. From there the Trolls took over. Kurt Gruppen scored on a jumper and then Will Bruisma nailed a trey to create a two-point lead. Gruppen sealed the victory in the final seconds with two free throws.  
 
The team, who shot 40.5% for the game, held Purdue-Calumet to 33.8%. They also grabbed a slight advantage on the boards with 57 to the Peregrines’ 53. Kurt Gruppen led the scoring with 29 points, hitting 9 for 17 from the field and 8 for 8 from the line. Ebiowei Porbeni had 12 points and 14 points for the double double. Ross Stuursma put in 18 points and Jonathan Huizinga had 11. Will Bruinsma ended the game with nine points and seven rebounds while Michael Thompson also had seven boards to go along with his six assists.
 
The Trolls will play next on Saturday, February 9, at Trinity International University (IL) at 7:30 pm.
