Men’s Basketball Stopped by Judson   (2/20/08)
In a game that decided a first place finish in the conference the Trolls could not get by Judson University (17-8, 10-2). A 69-78 loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Trolls and denied them a right to claim the conference title. The team is 17-11 overall and at 8-3 in second place in the CCAC standings with one game left.

Determination and adrenaline levels were high as the Trolls jumped to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. However Judson settled in to their game and midway through the period posted an 11 to 2 run that took away the Trolls’ lead. From that point on the Trinity trailed on the scoreboard and had to fight from behind. The scoring deficit only got larger as the Trolls were out-scored 4 to 11 in the final six minutes of the half. At the intermission the score was 33-44.

In the second period the double digit margin held through the first ten minutes. A run by the Trolls caught them to within five points with seven minutes left. Trinity continued to push hard to erase the gap and with 2:44 to play were within four points, 67-71. However Judson did what needed to be done from the line in the final minute to keep the Trolls from the win.

All night long the Trolls had a hard time stopping the Eagles long-range shooting. While Trinity hit only three treys, Judson was 10 for 21 (47.6%) from the arc. Kurt Gruppen led the team in scoring with 22 points while Ebiowei Porbeni had 14 and Will Bruinsma had 12. Jonathan Huizinga ended the game with nine rebounds. Michael Thompson and Bruinsma each had four assists.

The Trolls will host Calumet College of St. Joseph at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 23, in their final conference game.
