Matt Schans Resigns as Baseball Head Coach   (4/11/08)
After five years as head baseball coach, Matt Schans has announced his plans to leave Trinity. During his time at the College, he has made significant improvements to the baseball program, taught as an instructor in the physical education department, and served as the athletics facility coordinator.

When Schans took over in 2003-04, the baseball program had been through a handful of seasons with fewer than ten wins. Over the next four seasons Schans steadily made improvements with the 2007 season ending as one of the best in the history of the program. The 2007 season record of 25-25 was the first winning season since 1994 and the school mark for the most wins in a season. That squad also tied for second place in the conference, marking the highest ever finish for a Trinity baseball team. In addition, the team finished as the runner-up in the NCCAA North Central Region tournament and advanced to the NCCAA National Championships on an at-large bid.

“We greatly appreciate the efforts and contributions that Matt has made on behalf of Trinity and our baseball program,” said Athletic Director Jeff Raymond. “We wish him and his family the best as they move forward.”

The Trinity baseball job was Schans’ first collegiate head coaching position. Through the first four years he has a career coaching record of 67-92. Entering the 2008 season, he was just ten victories away from the school record for most coaching victories. At this year’s current record of 7-13, he should achieve that mark.

In the past four seasons, Schans has had three first-team and three honorable mention All-Conference selections, along with a CCAC Freshman of the Year. There have also been two NAIA All-Region and twelve NCCAA All-Region selections, plus three NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athletes. In addition Schans was named the CCAC and the NCCAA North Central Region Coach of the Year in 2007.

Schans will complete his duties through this school year, and then look to move with his wife Shannon and three children, Sophie, Ellee, and Casey, closer to family. The College will begin its search for a new coach immediately.
