BASEBALL
WITH FIRST WINS OF THE SEASON (3/22/04)
The baseball
team picked up their first wins of the season as they hosted Indiana University
-Northwest in a double header. The Trolls took the first game 3-2 and pulled
out the second game 7-6. The team is now 2-2 for the season.
Freshman Dan
Herder proved big at the plate as he provided the game winning hits
in both of the games. The Trolls jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first game
only to have the score tied in the 6th inning 2-2. With 2 outs and 2 runners
on base in the bottom of that inning Herder singled to center field
to drive in Aaron Werkman for the go-ahead run. The Trolls held
IU-Northwest to 3 up and 3 down in the top of the 7th to take the win.
In the second
game the Trolls gave up 4 runs in the first inning and we able to answer
with 2 of their own. Another run on an Andrew VanByssum sacrifice
in the 4th put the Trolls within one run. IU-Northwest came back in the
5th inning to pull ahead 6-4. Four hits in the 6th inning produced 3 more
runs for the Trolls to tie the game. Keith Schwarz replaced an injured
Kale Hoyt on the mound in the 7th inning and kept the Redhawks scoreless.
A fielding error got Werkman on base in the bottom of the 7th. Mike
Mercier advanced him on a sacrifice bunt and then Herder drove
a ball to left center to bring in the winning run.
