SOFTBALL TAKES TWO AGAINST CARDINAL STRITCH   (4/15/04)

The Trolls moved their conference record above the .500 mark with two conference wins over Cardinal Stritch University (WI). The team won the first game of the double header, 9-0, in 5 innings and then won the second game, 8-7, in the bottom of the 7th inning. They are now 6-4 in the conference and 11-19-1 overall.

The Trolls jumped out to a great start in the first game as they scored all 9 of their runs in the first 2 innings. In the first inning a hit by Jill Olson, followed by a double by Michelle Cooke, then a single by Stephanie Koedyker, and finished with a home run by Gail Landini gave the Trolls 4 runs. Behind 5 more hits in the 2nd inning the team scored 5 more runs. That was all they needed as they kept their opponent scoreless. Pitcher Michelle Wories threw a one-hitter.

In the second game the Trolls had to fight to stay alive. After 3 innings they had a slight lead at 4-3. They picked up one more run in the 4th to go ahead 5-3. Cardinal Stritch then scored 3 runs in the 5th inning to take a 6-5 lead. In the 6th inning hits by Angie Miller and Courtney Krasoczka got things going to set up two more runs to give the Trolls a 7-6 advantage. All they needed to do in the 7th inning was hold CSU and the game would be over. However the Wolves had 3 hits that inning to tie the game 7-7. Landini started the bottom of the inning off with a double. Amber Heaney then advanced pinch runner Amy Dykstra to third on a sacrifice. With two outs in the game a passed ball gave Dykstra the opportunity score the winning as she slide safely home.

The Trolls will play next on Monday, April 17, at Calumet College of St. Joseph at 3:00 pm.
