SOFTBALL
BACK TO WINNING WAYS (4/6/04)
The softball
team ended an 8-game losing streak with two non-conference victories over
Concordia University (IL). The Trolls were able to end both of the games
early by the mercy rule as they won the first game 9-1 in the 5th inning
and the second game 12-4 in the 6th inning. With the win the team is now
7-15-1 for the season.
The Trolls were
consistent in the first game as they had 11 hits and scored in every inning.
They also had Concordia held scoreless until the 5th inning. Pitcher Michelle
Wories had a no-hitter going until that inning when Concordia picked
up a hit that helped them score a run. The Trolls had a 7-1 lead and 2
outs in the bottom of the 5th when they came up big. Jill Olson
walked, Michelle Cooke singled, Gail Landini doubled to score
one run, and Stephanie Koedyker followed with a double to bring
in the game ending run.
In the second
game the Trolls gave up 4 runs in the first 3 innings, but were able to
score 8 of their own, including a single homer by Koedyker. The
Trolls had the opportunity to end the game on the 8-rule mercy rule in
the 5th inning as they scored 3 more runs with just 1 out. However with
two runners on base they were not able to put it away. They got the job
done in the 6th inning. With 2 outs Courtney Krasoczka got on base
with a double and then Amy Dykstra brought her home for the winning
run.
In all the Trolls
had 27 hits for the day. Koedyker ended with 5 hits, while Landini
and Krasoczka each had 4. Wories gets the pitching win
in the first game with only one hit. Vicki Fennema was the winning
pitcher in the second game.
The Trolls will
play on April 7 at home in a conference double header against Robert Morris
College at 3:00 pm.
