FALLS JUST SHORT AT ST. FRANCIS (4/7/04)
The baseball
team came up just short in a conference game with the University of St.
Francis. The Trolls pushed to the final innings before losing 4-5 in the
end. With the loss the team is now 4-11 for the season and 0-5 in their
conference race.
The Trolls struck
first in the game as a hit by Joel DeRuiter followed by a triple
by Aaron Werkman scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning. St. Francis tied the
game up as they scored one run in the 4th and one in the 5th inning. The
6th inning produced 4 hits for St. Francis and 2 more runs. The Troll
started out inning 7 with hits by DeRuiter, Werkman, and Mike
Mercier. With bases loaded Luke Post took a walk to bring
in DeRuiter. They were able to tie the score 4-4 in the 8th inning as Werkman
connected on his 3rd hit of the game to drive in a run. A fielding error
in the bottom of that inning allowed St. Francis to grab the lead back,
5-4. The Trolls got one runner on base in the 9th, but could not produce
a run from it.
In all the Trolls
had 9 hits for the game. Werkman led that group with his 3, followed
by DeRuiter and Mercier with 2 each. Luke Post was
on the mound for the duration and recorded 5 strike outs.
The Trolls will
play on April 8 at Judson College in a double header starting at 4:00 pm.
