OPPORTUNITIES
While enrolled at Trinity, a student, through one of our several affiliations, has opportunities for additional course work, which supplements the on-campus offerings. There are also opportunities for research and/or part-time employment in chemistry.
Additional Academic Opportunities
AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies (www.ausable.org). Our affiliation with this environmental institute since 1981 has allowed us to send students to one of their four locations (northern Michigan, Washington's Puget Sound, South Florida, India, and Kenya) to take courses related to environmental studies within the contest of Christian stewardship. There are two 5-week sessions in the summer as well as a May term and a January inter-term. Generous fellowships and scholarships are available.
Associated Colleges of Chicago Area (http://acca.cuchicago.edu). Through our membership in this consortium of 17 colleges in the Chicagoland area (ACCA) students have the opportunity to hear outside lecturers for which course credit is received. Each fall a course is offered jointly by these colleges. Students also may present the results of a laboratory investigation at the annual ACCA student symposium held in April.
Research and Employment Opportunities While Attending Trinity
Argonne National Laboratory (www.anl.gov). Our nation's first national laboratory, founded in 1946 on 1500 acres just 12 miles from Trinity is ome to 1000 scientists doing research in many different areas of science, including chemistry. Many of our chemistry majors have found CO-OP work opportunities at Argonne while attending Trinity. In addition to obtaining valuable research experience, our students have had opportunities to publish their results and earn generous part-time work wages.
Global Green Products (www.globalgreenproducts.com). This fairly new chemical company specializes in making environmentally friendly products. They lease space in Trinity's science center on the chemistry floor for their research. A symbiotic relationship between this company and Trinity allows for shared instrumentation as well as research opportunities for students.
Student laboratory assistant. Trinity chemistry majors can work up to 10 hours per week as their schedule permits doing such basic chemistry duties as preparing solutions, maintain stockroom organization, dispensing chemicals and equipmen for lab sessions, cleaning glassware, and other duties as assigned. No previous experience is necessary. Make application to the chemistry department chairperson.
Summer research experiences at large universities - REU (www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&from=fund). About 75 universities across the country offer funded summer research opportunities. A couple of Trinity chemistry majors have been accepted into these programs in recent years.
On campus research in chemistry. There are three different approaches to doing chemistry research on campus. A chemistry major can perform research under the guidance of one of the chemistry professors or the student can perform the research for Global Green Products (above) or the student can work with a retired Argonne chemist who is currently doing research on campus in one of our research laboratories.
