OPPORTUNITIESWhile enrolled at Trinity, a student, through one of our several affiliations, has opportunities for additional course work, which supplements the on-campus offerings. There are also opportunities for research and/or part-time employment in chemistry. Additional Academic Opportunities AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies (www.ausable.org). Our affiliation with this environmental institute since 1981 has allowed us to send students to one of their four locations (northern Michigan, Washington's Puget Sound, South Florida, India, and Kenya) to take courses related to environmental studies within the contest of Christian stewardship. There are two 5-week sessions in the summer as well as a May term and a January inter-term. Generous fellowships and scholarships are available. Associated Colleges of Chicago Area (http://acca.cuchicago.edu). Through our membership in this consortium of 17 colleges in the Chicagoland area (ACCA) students have the opportunity to hear outside lecturers for which course credit is received. Each fall a course is offered jointly by these colleges. Students also may present the results of a laboratory investigation at the annual ACCA student symposium held in April.
Research and Employment Opportunities While Attending Trinity
Student laboratory assistant. Trinity chemistry majors can work up to 10 hours per week as their schedule permits doing such basic chemistry duties as preparing solutions, maintain stockroom organization, dispensing chemicals and equipmen for lab sessions, cleaning glassware, and other duties as assigned. No previous experience is necessary. Make application to the chemistry department chairperson. Summer research experiences at large universities - REU (www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&from=fund). About 75 universities across the country offer funded summer research opportunities. A couple of Trinity chemistry majors have been accepted into these programs in recent years.
