205      Concepts of Health Care and Nursing
An exploration of the nature, scope, and conceptual foundations of health care and nursing. Introduces students to the major concepts of the nursing program: caring, self care, and care management. Required of nursing majors; open to all interested students. Credit Hours: 3

221      Nutrition
This study of basic and changing nutritional requirements relative to health and illness focuses upon substances, processes, assessment, and adaptions for health deviations. Credit Hours: 2

290      Nursing Concepts
Foundational concepts essential to the discipline of professional nursing. Open to RNBSN students only. Credit Hours: 3

308      Health Assessment and Promotion
This course develops skills in health assessment and health promotion across the life span. Students will learn to conduct physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual assessments and to identify clients at risk. The course emphasizes use of these data in health promotion and education. Includes experience in laboratory and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS 205, NURS 221, BIOL 206, PSYC 121, PSYC 123, SOC 121. Credit Hours: 3

309      Therapeutic Nursing Interventions
This course develops skill in the therapeutic nursing interventions essential for caring, self care, and care management. Prerequisites: NURS 205, all science prerequisites, NURS 221, NURS 310, pre or co-requisite. Credit Hours: 3

310      Pharmacology
Students study drug classifications, interactions, and interrelationships as used in the treatment of well and ill clients. Nursing implications are emphasized. Prerequisites: BIOL 205, BIOL 204, BIOL 206, CHEM 102, CHEM 101. Credit Hours: 3

312      Pathophysiology
This study of pathophysiological mechanisms related to disease emphasizes adaptive responses. Prerequisites: CHEM 102, CHEM 101, BIOL 206, BIOL 204, BIOL 205. Credit Hours: 3

313      Adult Health Nursing I
This course applies caring, self-care, and care management principles in nursing practice with the adult client seeking to maintain health. Clinical practice component in selected hospitals and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS 205, NURS 221, all nursing prerequisites, NURS 308, pre- or co-requisite, NURS 407, pre- or co-requisite, NURS 310, pre- or co-requisite. Credit Hours: 5

315      Adult Health Nursing II
This course synthesizes caring, self-care, and care management principles in nursing practice with the adult client seeking to maintain or restore health. Clinical practice component in selected hospitals and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS 308, NURS 309, NURS 310, NURS 313. Credit Hours: 5

316      Nursing Care of Childbearing Families
This course synthesizes caring, self-care, and care management principles in nursing practice with women, newborns, and families seeking to maintain or restore health. Clinical practice component in selected hospitals and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS 308, NURS 309, NURS 310, NURS 313. Credit Hours: 4

399      Independent Study
Topics are selected from the students’ major interests. Prerequisite: permission of the department. Prerequisites: NURS 399, need permission of the department. Credit Hours: 2

402      Nursing Research
This study of research concepts and techniques enables the student to evaluate nursing literature and nursing problems. Prerequisites: NURS 308, NURS 309, NURS 310, NURS 313, MATH 105, or mathematics 151 (may be taken concurrently). Credit Hours: 2

405      Nursing Care of Children and Families
This course synthesizes caring, self-care, and care management principles in nursing practice with children and families seeking to promote, maintain, or restore health. Clinical practice component in school, ambulatory, acute, and rehabilitative settings. Prerequisites: NURS 402, and all 300-level nursing courses. Credit Hours: 4

407      Mental Health Nursing Care
This course synthesizes caring, self-care, and care management principles in nursing practice with individuals, families, and communities seeking to promote, maintain, or restore mental health. Clinical practice component in selected hospital and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS 405, NURS 408, NURS 409, NURS 425, concurrent enrollment. Credit Hours: 4

408      Adult Health Nursing III
This course synthesizes caring, self-care, and care management principles in nursing practice with the adult client seeking to restore health. Clinical practice component in selected hospitals and community settings. Credit Hours: 5

409      Principles of Community Health
This course explores factors influencing the health of the community and the role of nursing in promoting community and public health. Examines the development of nursing informatics in the field of community health. Credit Hours: 2

413      Nursing Capstone Practicum
For basic students this course provides a student-to-graduate transitional experience in health care settings. This intensive clinical practicum permits the student to manage a full client workload with all of its duties and responsibilities. RN students contract with the instructor for an individualized, independent practicum designed to afford a learning experience beyond previous practice. Prerequisites: NURS 407, concurrent enrollment, successful completion of all prior required nursing courses. Credit Hours: 5

420      Topics in Nursing
An optional course offering the student opportunity to explore selected topics within health care. Topics offered will vary from year to year dependent upon faculty expertise and interest, student interest, and current issues. The course may be repeated for credit. There may be a clinical component to the topic. Credit Hours: 2

425      Issues in Nursing Practice
A synthesis course addressing current issues in nursing, including leadership and management, ethical, sociocultural, political, economic, legal, and technological issues, and their relevance to health care and nursing practice at the micro, meso, and macro levels of health care. Credit Hours: 3
