The gymnasium expansion project, currently underway, will benefit the entire Trinity community. The remodeling and expansion of the Mitchell Memorial Gymnasium will allow for greater use of the gymnasium. It will encourage physical fitness among students, faculty, and staff through the creation of the Fitness Center; provide a pleasant and comfortable space for community members to enjoy watching Trinity’s teams compete; and offer an increased opportunity for the College to host summer camps, community fairs, and other activities that benefit residents of the Palos Heights area.
Construction on the gymnasium continues to progress on schedule. The majority of the walls for the new gymnasium have been erected, the beams are being placed, and infrastructure for the new locker rooms, laundry facility, mechanical areas, and lobby is under construction. According to George Vander Velde ’63, vice president for campus development, “Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should stay on schedule for completion of Phase One in time for the beginning of the next school year.”
The College has received the first $495,000 from the State of Illinois and anticipates additional state funding, but more funds need to be raised through private donations. Trinity has received a generous dollar-for-dollar challenge grant for some of the amenities included in Phase Two. If the funding is in place, the College anticipates that the second phase of construction will begin in 2011 with a scheduled occupancy date in the early summer of 2012.
