Austin
Professor of Music Dr. Kenneth L. Austin, associate professor of music, holds degrees from Hope College, (B.M.), Yale University (M.M.), and the American Conservatory of Music (D.M.A.). He has also attended at the Boston University Conservatory of Music, Aspen Music School, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Dr. Austin has studied trumpet with Roger Voisin, Robert Nagel, Armando Ghitalla, and Arnold Jacobs. Dr. Austin is currently the director of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Brass Quintet at the College, in addition to his work as the Trumpet professor and music theory teacher. He is active internationally as an adjudicator, soloist, and brass clinician. The professor has taught instrumental music from the kindergarten through post-graduate levels, including trumpet at Yale and advanced conducting at Trinity for 13 years. He has directed middle school, high school, college, and professional ensembles, including the Manitoba Eastman Honor Band and the Thunder Bay Honor Band. He also has conducting experience with choir, band, and orchestra musical groups. In total, he has initiated and established three university band programs and three high school honor band festivals. Dr. Austin has performed in numerous symphony orchestras and brass ensembles and as a soloist in the United States, South America, and Canada. He has performed on stage with the Moody Blues, The Carpenters, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, the Young Messiah, TRUTH, and numerous other professionals. As a Christian musician, Dr. Austin has recorded at Bill Gaither's studio for many groups, including Sandi Patti and Steve Green. He has also performed for The Moody Church and Christian broadcast television and radio, both in Canada and the United States. Dr. Austin is the E-flat cornet soloist for the Yankee Brass of New England and the Bb solo cornet for the Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band Festival in Colorado. In addition to his work at Trinity, Dr. Austin gives numerous brass clinics nationally and internationally, performs in two Chicago area Symphony Orchestras, and is an adjudicator for festivals. He has just released a compact disc of 1860's E-flat cornet solos entitled, The Yankee Olio, which is obtainable by e-mailing Ken.Austin@trnty.edu Dr. Austin has three children, Joshua '96, Benjamin '04, and May '06. His wife, Lynn N. Austin, is a well known author of 13 novels. The Hallmark Company recently made her book, Hidden Places, into a movie. |
