Professional and Personal Interests

After working in the nursing profession for more than 25 years, Dr. Joyce Azzaline was ready to make the transition from educating patients to teaching students. In the fall of 2005, Azzaline joined the faculty of Trinity Christian College, bringing with her more than two decades of knowledge in inpatient, outpatient, and homecare, with a specialization in psychiatry and mental health nursing. Along with her valuable experiences as an R.N. at Palos Community Hospital, Azzaline has been a clinical specialist at Little Company of Mary Hospital and a supervisor and coordinator at Ingall’s Memorial Hospital.

“I have educated patients throughout my career, and I have always had a passion for teaching and sharing clinical insights with co-workers,” Azzaline said. “I eventually wanted to teach nursing students. My goal is to help them develop their calling to care for others. In psychiatry we focus on communication and being privileged to hear the patient’s story. I love interacting with the students and getting to know them; they have so much energy and spirit.”

Azzaline returned to her hometown after receiving her bachelor’s of science degree in nursing from Valparaiso University in Indiana. The professor joined the nursing faculty staff with a long list of achievements, including a master’s in nursing from St. Xavier University in Illinois and a master’s in health services from California College. She is an advanced practice nurse and  is board certified. In 2008, Azzaline earned her doctorate at Nova Southeastern University in Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, where she also served as the student council president.

“There are so many opportunities in nursing. There is a great need for nurses, especially in the field of geriatrics.” And Azzaline is quick to note the warmth and depth nurses educated at Trinity can provide those patients and all patients. “The Christian nurse brings so much to the patient; this interaction is filled with love and patience as the nurse does the Lord’s work.”

Joyce has been married to her husband, Michael, for more than 20 years; they have one son and one daughter and attend St. Stephen’s Church in Tinley Park, Illinois. Joyce is a Eucharistic Minister at St. Stephens. Claiming to still be a farm girl, Joyce and her family have raised a Golden Retriever and a domestic cat—all of whom are entitled to “senior citizen discounts.”

Taking pride in her volunteer work, Azzaline still finds time to crochet baby afghans for Project Linus, Warm-up American and Newborns in Need. Son, Michael is a student at Trinity, and daughter, Stephanie, plans to join her brother shortly.
