Professional and Personal Interests

“There is no better feeling than when a student says, ‘I got it!’”
    
Mari Buchanan says her greatest satisfaction comes from seeing her English students working together in earnest to tackle a task and “finally attaining the missing piece.” She says her students make teaching a joy.
    
“Most often, they are thoughtful learners who attempt to understand the material and enjoy being able to discuss their faith as it relates to course material. I want to continue to have students consider the world around them. The only way for them to grow in compassion is for them to be exposed to others.”
    
Buchanan believes God has gifted each person with the ability to learn.
    
“The mastery of the English language is fundamental, and I believe that students learn best when given the opportunity to work together. Therefore, classes should be interesting and collaborative.”
    
Buchanan has taught composition classes for the City Colleges of Chicago and Chicago State University. She received a master’s degree in English from Chicago State and plans to pursue another master’s in general theology.
    
“The Trinity community eagerly embraces my interest in the intersection of literature and religion. My colleagues give me the opportunity to discuss the two from the Christian perspective and receive thoughtful, legitimate feedback. There are experts here who readily engage in discourse.”
    
When she is not teaching, Buchanan enjoys cooking, reading, and swimming. She and her 10-year-old son, MarQuis, attend Christ Bible Church in Chicago.
