Professional and Personal Interests

Stephen Lake believes in challenging his students with a Christian philosophical vision for life and strives to model it in both his classroom and scholarship.
   
“Philosophy,” he insists, “is asking good questions about the things that are most important to us. Since ‘all truth is God’s truth,’ Christian philosophers should seek answers to their questions through the eyes of faith, and acknowledge truth wherever it may be found. That gives us both confidence and humility in our search.
   
“In class, we have various ways of raising questions—often through discussion as much as traditional lecture, sometimes in presentations, games, or multimedia activities. I believe that writing is also essential for thinking, so I require my students to write analytically and reflectively.”
   
Lake is a graduate of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He received his master’s and Ph.D. in philosophy at Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven in Belgium. He started teaching at Trinity in 2004.

One of Lake’s current scholarly interests revolves around ethics. He has published and given presentations on Just War ethics and is at work on a book project titled Ethics After 9/11.
   
Lake enjoys spending time with his family and his church. He and his wife, Christina, and son, Donovan, live in Wheaton, Illinois. They worship nearby at Church of the Savior, an Anglican Mission in America parish, where he serves as the senior lay leader and a member of the preaching team.
