Bill Miller
Assistant Professor of Computer Science

After retiring as a 30-year veteran of Caterpillar, Inc. in 2002, Bill Miller came aboard the Trinity faculty to teach computer science in January 2003. He found a greater sense of fulfillment as a teacher than he did as an engineer at the construction and mining equipment manufacturer.

"Every morning when I wake up, I look forward to coming to work," he says. "I have a passion for teaching and take great pleasure helping people learn new concepts and grow in their understanding. The opportunity to teach at a Christian college is a tremendous privilege, and I truly feel God's calling to be here."

During his three decades in the manufacturing industry, Miller compiled knowledge, insight, and experience about computers and technological processes that enable him to present the curriculum from a practical perspective.

"I can match the technical aspects of computer science with the relevant applications in the work world. There are so many different contexts that I can identify for my students that will help them understand better what they need to know and why they need to know it. My experience allows me to convey lessons in everyday terms.

"The computer world is never satisfied; it always wants to expand its boundaries. That means that computer professionals must assume that we will never stop learning. One of the challenges I face is staying current with the industry trends and keeping my students on pace as well."

Born in El Dorado, Kansas, Miller spent much of his childhood in foreign countries as the son an Army officer. After coming back to the United States, he attended Governors State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications. He later returned there to attain a master's in computer science.

Miller now lives in New Lenox, Illinois, with his wife of 33 years, Donna. They attend St. Peter Lutheran Church in Joliet, Illinois, where he regularly teaches a Bible class.
