Professional and Personal Interests
There is nothing quite as satisfying to Paul Roggendorff as seeing the sudden look of understanding appear on a student’s face. It is one way the professor knows he has achieved his aim of helping students love their neighbors as themselves.
“By sharing what I know about Hispanic language, literature, history, and culture, I am equipping students for the intellectual journey to love their neighbor, which begins with demystifying the ‘other.’ Demystification leads to acceptance, inclusion, and ultimately, love.
“Through God’s love, we help his work of reconciling us to Him by bringing down the ethnic, racial, cultural, national, linguistic, and religious barriers so that through our diversity, we are one under God.”
After earning a master’s degree in Hispanic studies and completing Ph.D. work in Spanish literature, Roggendorff taught for one year at Northern Kentucky University. He joined Trinity in 2003.
“I teach at Trinity because I wanted the freedom to teach Spanish and Spanish-American literature from a Christian worldview. My main goal is to build up the foreign language program.”
Roggendorff has several hobbies including woodworking and reading. He and his wife, Shelly, are the parents of two young boys. The Roggendorffs live in Romeoville, Illinois, and attend Naperville United Church of Christ.
