Professional and Personal Interests
Dr. Rick Snoeyink believes it is his calling in life to pass the baton.
“I want to serve my students so they in turn will be better able to serve their students. I simply cannot pass on what I know by telling; instead, I need to develop a safe learning environment, which challenges students to stretch, to discover, and to build their own knowledge and skills.”
In the education classes he teaches, Snoeyink instills a passion in his students for continual learning. He strives for new ways to present concepts and make theories come alive.
“I am most satisfied when I can see growth in my students. I am blessed because I teach a lot of freshmen and then see them again in their student teaching seminar as seniors. It is very gratifying to see the transformation from timid first year college student to confident educational professional, ready to redeem the world.”
Snoeyink received his bachelor’s of science degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned his master’s degree in elementary education at Purdue University- Calumet in Hammond, Indiana, then completed his doctorate in educational technology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
He taught in Berrien Springs, Michigan, public schools, Terra Ceia Christian School in Pantego, North Carolina, and DeMotte Christian School in DeMotte, Indiana, before coming to Trinity in 2001. Former students recall Snoeyink as a stickler for detail—especially when it came to spelling. He coached the DeMotte Christian School spell bowl team to six state championships.
Outside the classroom, the professor enjoys riding his bike, photography, and editing video. He and his wife, Donna, have four daughters—Becky, Julie, Erin, and Sarah. They live in Schererville, Indiana, and attend Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Lansing, Illinois.
