Today we drove to the active volcano, Arenal. We had a great Costa Rica lunch in Fortuna. We continue to see many Toucans, flycatchers, a few hawks, many oropendula, warblers and creepers. This afternoon we went to the Arenal Volcano National Park and hiked for two hours, including rock climbing and bolder hopping on the 1992 lava flow. On the hike we were treated to several Great Currasow, a wild turkey that behaves somewhat like a peacock. We are staying at a place where you feel very close to the volcano. The clouds cover the top, but occasionally part so the whole volcano can be seen. We are hoping to see some night time eruption. Tomorrow we will leave for Monteverde.
