Solutions:  2000 Team Competition

1.  The maximum number of cards is 16.  One way to arrange the cards is to have two columns of 5 cards oriented with the longest edge horizontal and have two columns of 3 cards with the longest edge vertical.  There will be four squares uncovered in the grid.

2.  50 = 3 + 47 = 7 + 43 = 13 + 37 = 19 + 31

3.  The solutions are

e.  x = 5, y = 15
4.  There are 8 cubes with no painted faces, 24 cubes with 1 painted face, 24 cubes with 2 painted faces, and 8 cubes with 3 painted faces.  There are no cubes which have 4 or more painted faces.
