A Snapshot of Interim 2010

Interims 2010Interim 2010 once again gave students the opportunity to travel across the globe, work on service trips, and explore other cultures. Trinity sets aside this time to give students opportunities to learn “way” outside the classroom, offering a diverse selection of courses overseas, across the U.S., and on campus.

Under the Sea
Dr. Patti Powell, associate professor of education, and adjunct professor Audra Gray led a team of eight students to San Diego, California, for Marine Biology for Women. They lived on the Leona June for the term as they worked toward gaining their PADI certification in scuba diving.  This also gave the girls the chance to explore the waters by Mexico and Southern California and see firsthand some of the sea’s incredible creatures, from Pacific white-sided dolphins to sea lions and gray whales.

“It truly was a life-changing experience,” said junior Sara Ooms of Lansing, Illinois.

Re-building Communities
A team of 14 students traveled to Mississippi with Dr. Mandi Maxwell, assistant professor of mathematics, and Nikki Bruna, social work department project coordinator, for a week-long service trip building a home for a family that lost theirs in Hurricane Katrina. The group partnered with Habitat for Humanity and worked on the siding, painting, caulking, roofing, and other jobs. They also toured the Waveland, Mississippi, and New Orleans, Louisiana, regions and witnessed the devastation from Hurricane Katrina that still remained.

“Seeing firsthand the slow process of rebuilding the cities made many of us realize how desperately this area needs our continued help and support,” said team member Melissa Voss ’11 of Orland Park, Illinois. The students were also given the chance to meet the family that would be moving into the home and participate with them and the Habitat construction crew in the home dedication ceremony.

Serving in Guatemala
A service-oriented Interim to Guatemala gave students the opportunity for a firsthand experience helping those less fortunate. The group worked at a wellness clinic as well as distributed food, clothing, soap, and other supplies to children and families.

“We have been used mightily by God this whole time,” wrote group leader Gretchen Carolan, professor of nursing, in the team’s travel journal.

Many more opportunities
Other courses included the Worship Tour (Practicing the Art of Leading Worship) through Canada and the eastern United States to lead schools and churches in multicultural worship; a trip to Costa Rica to hike through the rainforest and observe wildlife; a trip to Europe exploring Olympic stadiums past, present, and future; the men’s and women’s soccer teams’ mission trips to Costa Rica to witness to others through the sport of soccer; a stay at the local Tabitha and Harvey houses working with Restoration Ministries; a tour through Ireland; and many on-campus courses offering everything from improv theatre to making music videos.
