men's basketball coach Tim Walker plucked a jewel from western Michigan
when prized recruit Ty DeWitte inked a national letter of intent to attend
the College beginning next fall.
DeWitte, a 6-foot-8-inch,
245-pound center at Unity Christian High School in Hudsonville, Michigan,
shunned several Division I schools in favor of Trinity. His college coach
believes his signing will be a turning point for the Trolls basketball
program.
"I've known about him for
a couple of years, and I'm really excited to get him," Walker said. "He
will help our recruiting tremendously, especially in Michigan. He brings
a bit more credibility to the College. Other kids in that region will take
notice and want to be a part of what we're building.
"Ty's also a young man who
can play right away. We don't have to wait for him to put on weight in
order to compete at the collegiate level. You don't get too many kids like
that, so we anticipate he will help us immediately."
DeWitte signed his letter
at Unity Christian during a ceremony whose audience included Walker, Interim
President Tony Diekema, and Vice President for Advancement and Admissions
Pete Hamstra. The all-conference performer is listed as one of the top
10 high school centers in Michigan.
"I was looking for a Christian
school with small class sizes," DeWitte said. "I like the players, and
I feel very comfortable coming on board. Plus, there's so much to do (in
Chicago). It's my favorite city of all (the schools I considered)."
