Professor’s Book Provides ESL Teaching Strategies

Students come to class with very different backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency. This is especially true for English language learners. In their book Constructivist Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners, authors Trina Vallone ’99, assistant professor of education at Trinity Christian College, and Sharon Adelman Reyes, associate professor of education at Loyola University, link constructivism with the instruction of English-as-a-Second Language learners.

In a learner-centered classroom, a teacher, employing constructivism, will act as a facilitator in utilizing the interests and unique needs of students as a guide for meaningful instruction.

“The background of the learner is highly respected,” said Vallone. “The teacher uses the knowledge of that background to help construct the content with the students. This allows each student to have a voice in the classroom.”
Vallone and Reyes will be signing copies of the newly released book in the Bootsma Bookstore Café on Friday, April 18 from 3 to 7 p.m.
