Students Accepted into ACI Internship Program

Eight Trinity students have been accepted into the ACI summer internship program for 2008. Students will serve as counselors during a six-week Culture Studies Day Camp for students ages 5 to 12 who are currently enrolled in the after-school program at Restoration Ministries in Harvey, Illinois.

Trinity students include: AkinWale Akintunde ’09 of Chino, California; Arthur Drenth ’07 of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Elizabeth Dyk ’08 of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Nichole Heyboer ’09 of Fremont, Michigan; Mary Beth Palmer ’07 of Tucson, Arizona; Anna Poll ’09 of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Emily VandenBrink ’09 of Orland Park, Illinois; and Elizabeth Wessels ’09 of South Holland, Illinois.

The project, funded by a grant from the Associated Colleges of Illinois, will provide Trinity students with the opportunity to work with elementary and middle school children from high-need schools.

The intern counselors will receive two weeks of training prior to the camp. Through this program, the interns will develop competence in fostering a climate of care, respect, and the value of students’ cultures in the classroom. They will also develop creative practices of communication, instructional design, and implementation with children from high-need schools.

This program is also another opportunity for Trinity and its students to collaborate with Restoration Ministries, which has a long-standing partnership with the College. Many Trinity students are active volunteers in the after-school program through other service learning options.
