TRINITY CELEBRATES DIVERSITY
OF CULTURES
The many nations represented
at Trinity were united in their diversity when students, faculty, and staff
of various ethnic backgrounds attended the College's "Celebration of Cultures"
October 11.
Nearly 100 people of Latin
American, Native American, Asian, African, and European descent gathered
in the Grand Lobby of the Ozinga Chapel to learn about and enjoy the differences
in the history, customs, and achievements of their respective cultures.
"This was an excellent evening
of education," said sophomore Stephan Grandison, president of the Organization
of African-American Unity (OAAU). "It was obvious to see diversity welcomed
here and the numerous gifts everyone brings to this community. We need
to have more events like this where we focus on unifying all the different
groups on campus."
In
addition to OAAU, members of the Asian American Alliance, the Spanish Club,
and the International Missionaries spoke about their organizations' purposes
and goals at the College. The celebration included a trivia contest that
highlighted some of the cultures' people, events, and traditions. The evening's
festivities ended with a dinner that featured ethnic treats.
"It is beautiful to see these
students come together to share each other's backgrounds and experiences,"
said Dr. Nelvia Brady, the College's director of ethnic diversity. "This
gives them an opportunity to learn more about their peers and appreciate
the differences that each of them brings to Trinity."
