“We often refer to creation as ‘God’s design.’ For graphic design, God’s organizational discipline has never stopped.”

Kaleb Dean ’14 believes that the graphic design profession has a responsibility to convey meaning, messages, and ideas that other people may not be able to convey on their own. “By organizing–and reorganizing–creation, we give life to these ideas that are vital to helping communities flourish.”

What drew him to Trinity:
A 2014 graduate, Dean knew the culture, the people, and the mission of the College. “It was an easy decision coming back to teach after some professional experience and continued education. Design is a part of every aspect of my life. I eat, sleep, and dream design—teaching design is just another extension of my career immersion.”

Research interests:
Dean is curious as to why, after the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series, did 5 million people show up to celebrate the team winning a baseball game? “It was just a baseball game. From an individual game perspective, it was no different from one of the other 102 wins they had that season. I’m interested in what design can do to first study this phenomenon, and second, recreate it in another environment. How do you get 5 million people to represent other messages?”

When he’s not teaching:
When he’s not teaching, Dean runs the studio Pen and Lens with his wife, Becky ’14, pursues his master’s degree at University of Illinois at Chicago, and keeps up with his fitness regimen at the gym. “Design is my life—I will forever design in some form or another. Whether that’s designing a publication, a business’ systems flow, or a workout program (I’m a Certified Personal Trainer), design permeates all aspects of my life.”
