Ever wonder what cop shows cops watch? Here is the opportunity to learn about the television heroes of yesterday like Lee Marvin in M Squad and Sergeant ‘Just the facts, ma’am’ Friday’ from Dragnet, to later shows, such as Hill Street Blues. Led by Professor of Criminal Justice Dennis Connelly, this class will discuss the television shows that accurately attempt to depict policing, such as, Police Story, to those that are not as accurate. We will view and discus scenes from the  selected shows while discovering how the shows were developed, discussing technical advisors, and learning interesting facts about television and the police force.  This course will take place online via Zoom. A link and complete instructions will be sent out by email a few days prior to the event.

Living in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic is unique but, despite our frequent use of the term, not unprecedented. In these two sessions, Professor of History Kyle Dieleman will lead a discussion about the deadliest pandemic in recorded history—the Black Death, also known simply as The Plague. We will explore the causes, spread, symptoms, treatments, and preventions related to the Black Death in Europe during the 1300s and beyond. In particular, we will read and discuss Christian understandings of and approaches to the Black Death pandemic. Our learning will also allow us to reflect on commonalities and differences between the Black Death and our own pandemic and, by doing so, allow us to consider what it is to be human and to live together as a society.

This course will take place online via Zoom. A link and complete instructions will be sent out by email a few days prior to the event.

The first session will take place on March 18 and the second session on March 25.

Cost: $20 for SALT Members; $30 for Non-Members

History Professor Dr. David Brodnax will lead a virtual discussion on Ta-Nehisi Coates’ recent book, The Water Dancer. A Los Angeles Times’ book review describes The Water Dancer as “a spellbinding look at the impact of slavery that uses meticulously researched history and hard-won magic to further illuminate this country’s original sin” in which “Coates envisions the transcendent potential in acknowledging and retelling stories of trauma from the past as a means out of darkness.” The book and discussion are relevant for the historical issues of race and slavery but also for the contemporary practice and lasting effects of racism and racial discrimination today.  This discussion will take place online via Microsoft Teams. A link and complete instructions will be sent out by email a few days prior to the event.

Trinity Christian College Theatre presents the 18th Annual Student-Directed One-Act Plays. This event will feature four short plays for a total performance time of approximately 90 minutes. The plays being performed for this event include:

  • A Matter of Husbands by Ferenc Molnar, directed by Adriana Klein (’24)
A Matter of Husbands features a conversation between a famous actress and an earnest young woman as they discuss the young woman’s suspicions that her husband is having an affair. Stories are exchanged, lies are told, men are hidden in furniture pieces, and hilarity ensues!
  • The Door by Paul Elliott, directed by Mikey Moore, Jr. (’25)
The Door follows a conversation between Grace and her grandson Justin. It seems like a normal conversation, but as the story progresses, something is not right. Justin is not actually there; Grace is just imagining him. In reality, he has been brutally murdered due to his sexuality.
  • Mink by Peter Eyre, directed by MJ Huizenga (’24)
Mink is a mischievous farce that follows the story of a well-meaning but misguided trio of animal rights activists as they attempt to liberate a captive mink. The story relies heavily on physical humor, and this production will incorporate a modernized version of traditional theatre masks.
  • The Twelve-Pound Look by J.M. Barrie, directed by Nick Morrison (’25)
Harry Sims is preparing to be knighted, and a typist is coming to write up the story about him. Upon her arrival, Harry finds out that the typist is his ex-wife, Kate. He believes that she left him for another man, but upon further questioning, he finds out her reasons for leaving him aren’t what he expected.

Performance runs 4:30-6:00pm, doors open 4:15pm (optional Fall Fest pizza dinner afterward from 6:15-7:15pm).
