“So much of psychology is about relationships. In the world today, there are many broken relationships. Students who graduate with degrees in psychology go on to do their part in healing those relationships.”

Dr. Jessica Clevering is fascinated by the effects that groups can have on individuals and that individuals can have on groups. “I was always interested in the field of psychology in general, but living and traveling abroad gave me a desire to learn about the intricate ways in which human lives and cultures are connected,” Clevering says. She wants her students to be able to think Christianly about their careers, their social settings, their conversations with their family and friends, and their daily choices.

What drew her to Trinity:

She was drawn to the College because of its foundation in Christianity. “I can actively live out my faith on campus and challenge my students to do the same.”

Research interests:

Clevering’s research interests include identity, social identity theory, religiosity, and prejudice. “I research how being a member of a certain social group can affect how you see yourself, how you act, your attitudes, and your emotions. To understand these relationships is to understand yourself better and to also understand the implications of your social group membership.”

When she’s not teaching:

When not teaching, Clevering is often playing with her daughter, watching superhero or sci fi movies with her husband, cooking, or reading.

Making a difference with understanding and healing

The counseling and psychology programs at Trinity develop theoretical insight and professional skills through study, research, and practice. Because courses are taught with a Christian perspective, students will leave prepared for graduate study and to serve in a variety of psychology-related careers and professions with understanding and healing in mind.

Trinity also offers an Adult Undergraduate degree in psychology and a Graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

At Trinity, we also offer a 5.5 year BA/MA program. Through this unique opportunity, students who are working towards their B.A. or B.S. in Psychology at Trinity can apply to begin taking graduate-level courses in their junior or senior year. This allows students to earn both a psychology B.A. and a counseling M.A. from Trinity in five and a half years, instead of six years.

Graduates of our undergraduate psychology program who want to make a difference in adults’ lives can put their degrees to work in human resources, law enforcement and corrections, business management, and many other settings. Those who enjoy working with children and young adults may work as career counselors, child development specialists, child welfare caseworkers, or they may obtain state certifications and teach psychology at the high school level.

Contact us to visit our beautiful campus, conveniently located near Chicago, to learn more about this rewarding program. When you’re ready to take the next step toward your future career goals, apply online.

Department Chair

Dr. Derrick Hassert

Professor of Psychology; Chair, Division of Psychology
Phone: 708.239.4862    Email: derrick.hassert@trnty.edu

Dr. Hassert seeks to share his enthusiasm for the science of psychology in each of his courses, and throughout the department. “I know that all of the faculty share the same fascination with the field that I do. Psychology touches every aspect of our lives, from the functioning of the brain and the mind, to issues of mental health, to how we behave and relate to one another as people. In essence, the fascination with psychology lies in its ability to help us understand ourselves and others better.”
